It’s Beginning To Feel a Lot Like Christmas (well, not really)

This coming Christmas will be my fourth Christmas here in Florida. As we move into December, I can’t help but notice that despite Radio 1 DJs starting to churn out a couple of Christmas songs, it just does not feel like Christmas to me.

I’ve decided there may be several reasons: the first of which is just that I’ve been working so hard lately, that I’ve next to no time to do anything but work and sleep.

The second reason is that for the very reason Florida is such a popular winter destination, it takes away somewhat from the Christmas feel. The traditional Christmas scene features snow, not sun and sand.

Lastly, and I think perhaps the most likely reason, is that despite all the Christmas “crap” being in stores for months now, Christmas to me is all about walking home on a damp evening after work, since the sun set at 4pm, kicking off your clothes at work, turning on the Christmas lights and enjoying living by firelight and “fairylight”. On top of that, there’s also the merriment that goes with Christmas, something that in my opinion is harder to come by in America: it’s just so corporate here, that it’s all about ensuring you have the most outlandish display of lights on your street, buying gifts for anyone who forms any part of your life and churning out the printed and unsigned Christmas photo cards, because no one has the energy to write out a little note to those that matter to them.

Aside from the near denial that Christmas even exists any more (don’t forget to put up your “Dream Tree” – FTW?), it just seems that it’s all about ensuring you fulfill your capitalist requirements before realizing that it’s more about relaxing and enjoying the company of family and friends, not because you have to, but because you want to.
